Day 7: A Historical/
modern icon you admire satirized using the reason you admire them the most.
First it was only the computer, ended up with ipods and converses and BAKUFU SUCKS badges, so it’s not so much of a satire anymore but a parody, maybe? It’s Sakamoto Ryoma, in any case! (The lower-class samurai who managed to pull a few important strings that led to the Meiji Restoration and the unification of Japan… after he was assassinated at 31 years of age in 1867.)
I found out about Ryoma while in Japan because the famous photo kept popping up everywhere, and he was a character in the dorama JIN (psssst has anyone watched this amazing thing?!).
I actually read a book about him that worded rather nicely why he’s so loved a figure - it’s not necessarily because of the man himself, but his myth and legacy and the “Ryoma spirit”. He was a nobody, yet he had this impossible-sounding dream of uniting Japan and just went for it. He talked to and chose to spend his time with the right people who could help him. He’s said to have been very determined (apparently!) and he did what he wanted with his life. AND I love the fact that he wore leather boots with his traditional clothes. He also dreamt of travelling.
—- Basically, the reason why Iadmire him is because he was into new and different things and wasn’t afraid to show it.
